Cable Protection System

First Subsea’s Cable Protection System (CPS) comprises the monopile interface connector connected to a flexible polyurethane bend stiffener.

  • Engineered to optimise the fatigue resistance and wear on the cable, and allows the cable to be pulled through the CPS to the hang off deck for termination.
  • Assembly of the CPS can be completed either at the cable manufacturers onshore or offshore on the installation vessel. It is then deployed from the cable laying vessel, and pulled in using the monopile’s 3Te winch.

Multi-Point Grip

First Subsea’s connector technology is based on rows of balls each held within a taper, arranged circumferentially. As the connector is inserted and axial load applied the balls roll up the taper to grip the external surface. indenting the mating part. The balls plastically deforms the mating part creating a ‘tear drop’ shaped indent. The higher the load, the deeper the indent, the greater the grip.

Smooth Installation

As the cylindrical interface connector is pulled into the monopile base the balls roll back, and retract against springs. The rolling motion of the balls reduces friction between the connector and monopile wall. The cylindrical connector and circumferential arrangement of the rows of balls is able to grip the monopile wall in any orientation with a minimum of 10 balls gripping the wall at all times. Over pulling the connector simultaneously initiates breakage of the weak link and the balls are released to grip the wall of the monopile, and cable pulled through to the hang off connection.

Installation Scenarios

CPS installation pull-in scenarios and site integration tests can be fully simulated using First Subsea’s purpose built test facilities in Lancaster prior to deployment offshore. The rig is capable of simulating a cable weight of up to 100T and it can also evaluate the angle of connector approach with the maximum cable loads applied. First Subsea is an approved American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), DNV, GL, Bureau Veritas and American Petroleum Institute (API) manufacturer of offshore mooring accessories.
